Times Flies When You're Not Rowing

It's been over a month since my last post and not much has happened on the rowing front. I've been ill and then injured! It really never rains it pours! I had a couple of weeks good rowing after my last post and rowed a good combination of steady stuff and some intervals finally I was getting some metres on the board.

The I lost a week to flu and during the come back from flu my back started hurting during some sprint work. It's settled down to the left hand side around the small of my back which hopefully means no damage to the spine. Even so I think the general rule of 'don't muck about with your back' is a good one so I've rested it for two weeks now and the soreness is all but gone.

I went to Evesham as chief cheerleader to the ever impressive freespirits. Saw some great rows by all of the team and had lots of fun and banter along the way. My trainers were stars of the day powering Skipeola to third in the 30-39 category, I'm not sure I'll ever make them go that fast again. Stan's row was impressive also as it was quicker throughout and a move away form the crazy finishes.

Most moving image of the day was definitely Woj rowing a PB and then overwhelmed by the emotion of it all attempted sexual relations with the machine. It was both disturbing and beautiful at the same time.

Some Success

I'm very unfit. I'm having to tone down the training a bit more as trying to go straight into something like the Pete plan takes more time than I have and physically is too demanding for me.

Last night I did 30mins of solid rowing and survived. I've realised in my current state that's about right for me and i need to get plenty of these done and work form there.

I tried some 1000m intervals on Wednesday eve with Pete (Tyelander) who i train with but the pumping action of rowing rather stimulated my bowel leading to a spectacular toilet visit! that's never happened before but considering the action of a rowing machine I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often. I may start a thread called 'the biggest rowing poo I ever did'.

Away from the erg. I'm very pleased Lee won the apprentice and Heroes is getting really rather good!

What a wimp

Two days and two wimp outs. Very stupid really as I find getting in the garage had enough without not training when I get there!

The first one was excusable as I miss judged the pacing on some intervals and began to die, the second was not as I'd done 10mind really gently and just couldn't be bothered to keep going. Pathetic. But a symptom of rowing too late and without having drunk much.

Hoping for two or three good session this week before weekend away.

When babies are ill. Everything stops

Over a week of rowing lost all in all to a mixture of my germs and then Leah's. She's six months now and this was her first proper illness and there was no time to row as she wasn't sleeping and needed a lot of TLC.

Have rowed for the last couple of days did 5*1000m last night and slow 30mins the night before. I just need to put a good run together to get me used to rowing every day(ish) again. There's no doubt that working in London plus the sleepiness of a new baby has made finding that hour in the evening very hard.

The most amazing thing is that spider Armageddon has happened in my garage! There are literally hundreds of tiny dead spiders all over the floor. It looked like dust but upon closer inspection they are baby spiders. This has coincided with a change in the style of spider that lives in my garage. Previously it was big hairy ones but this year I've only seen the long legged bandy ones (I'm sure they have proper names). Spider war seems to be happening above my head as I row. Very odd indeed!

Dreaded Lurgy

Still no rowing for me, I have the dreaded lurgy.

Very frustrating, I just seem unable to get my season going right now. Played football today and won, nearly getting into a fight for the 2nd time in three weeks! I think my wife was right to ask 'why do they always want to do it to you'? I didn't have the honesty to say, it's because as the main defender I generally spend most of the match chipping away at the striker's ankles and muscling them into walls. I pleaded ignorance.

A game of football has however shown I was right not to be rowing, I was pretty dizzy at times and my cough has got more severe as a result of bein a bit out of breath. I hope to get some gentle metres in over the weekend in between and couple a BBQ's and the Heineken cup final!

No ergs in Liverpool

First things first, we lost the football match. Gutting as we lost 2-1 to a last minute goal that I nearly got across and covered. Still they were top of the league and we almost grabbed a point so were pleased and disappointed in equal measure.

I rowed Saturday night. Trying to get back into rowing for longer periods of time and so I covered the monitor very carefully with a DVD box set cardboard cover so I could only see the strokes per minute. I then put on a Killers album and tried just to keep going at 20spm for the whole album, which I now know is 48 minutes. Pleased to have done it although it was pretty slow!

No rowing since then as I've been to Liverpool with work, I'm not devoted enough to specifically book hotels with ergs. That my cross the line between hobby and mental illness. If I row tonight it will be a late one as I'm on baby sitting duty, I haven't managed to persuade myself that I'm ok in the garage with the baby monitor on.

Heroes and Rowing

Another late one caused by watching Heroes, proper quality TV, I'm not really a sci fi person but I got really in to the first series and am really enjoying this one. My wife was brave enough to watch this episode after chickening out on the last two. Silar the main baddy is back and once more back in the garage every bump and noise outside made me wonder if he was here!

The rowing went ok. I averaged 1.58,1 through 5 1500m intervals. It's a start and gives me something to beat next time. I have to expect that as I've not rowed for so long. Steady improvement is my target I'm not going to suddenly get all back.

No rowing today as I'm playing for the work five-a-side team. We're playing one of the best teams in the league and so hopes aren't high. I shall be occupying my usual defensive role. It kills my legs and tomorrow will be a steady row to recover. Hopefully in the back garden but I'm not sure the weather will be up to it.

Mainly watching the Apprentice but rowing as well

I suppose I should explain the phrase, 'I'm just off to the garage'. The rowing machine is in my garage and it's the phrase I use before I vanish other than the sound of distant grunts and the odd shout (am I the only one who talks to himself rowing?).

Last night 'I'm off to the garage' wasn't of course said until after the Apprentice, TV gold. Extra comedy this week caused by the only ones with a brain all ending up on the same team while the four thickos had to struggle together, very funny!

Rowing was one of my standard endurance sets 30mins then 20mins at around 22spm. Having not done this kind of thing for a while I'd forgotten how much even the gentle stuff makes you want to stop. But all in all didn't start until 10.30 so pleased to put another 11 and a bit k on the log card.

Tonight is an aerobic threashold set. It's gonna hurt!

2k Results

7.33 is the answer to how much I've lost! That's nearly 30 seconds in 6 months off. Gonna have to make some time up!

The plan now is on to the Pete plan and edge it down slowly.

Over all it didn't hurt too bad and i think I paced it quite well as I didn't die but was able to finish strongly in the last 300m. Quite pleased!

How rubbish have I become?

Well here we are then, my first post.

The idea of this is to provide me with some motivation for using my rower.

I've hardly rowed since my disappointments at BIRC and have had several failed attempts to restart. This is the latest plan and tonight I will attemp to measure just what the month away have cost me. I'm gonna do a 2k!

It's never that simple i'm currently sat in my offic in Central London and have the usual 1-3/4 hour commute yet! The Central Line can really screw up you rowing!
